FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHY GO TO A CHIROPRACTIC PHYSICIAN?

Chiropractic is an art, science, and philosophy that addresses the relationship between the structure (spine and extremities) and the function (nervous system) as it relates to the preservation of health. Chiropractors are trained in traditional medical diagnosis but use a hands-on approach, without drugs or surgery, to assist the body in the healing process. We focus on good body mechanics (posture, ergonomics), exercise (stretching, cardiovascular), diet, and supplementation (vitamins, minerals, herbs) to help support and keep the body healthy. In addition, communication with your M.D. and other health care practitioners is frequently utilized so that your health care team is complementary and integrative.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT ON MY FIRST VISIT?

Your first visit will provide a health history assessment, a physical examination, a treatment, possibly nutritional supplement and ergonomic recommendations, and home instructions. X-rays, MRIs, and other diagnostic tests may be prescribed, but only if necessary.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET BETTER?

Everyone heals at a different rate. Some factors that affect the rate of healing include the length of time you have had the condition, whether it was traumatic or cumulative in origin, and your general health and level of stress . Some people are better in two visits, and some take more time. If you do not experience increased movement and decreased pain, you may be referred back to your MD, or on to other kinds of treatment like Physical Therapy, Acupuncture or Pilates.

WHAT OTHER THINGS DO CHIROPRACTORS DO?

Besides chiropractic adjustments and lifestyle modification programs, chiropractic doctors provide nutritional recommendations, exercise and strength training guidance, ergonomic consultations, physical therapy techniques and modalities, and referrals to additional health care providers.

Performers, athletes and musicians often come in before a gig to improve performance, and after one to aid in recovery. Student come in before and after finals for the same reason. Manipulation can help any joint, from shoulders to feet. TMJ,or jaw problems are common, and respond well to treatment. Digestive problems require a medical work-up first, but if no diagnosis is found, can often be helped by manipulation.
